How to Eat Bacon and Reduce Your Risk of Coronavirus: Tips

The American Heart Association advises people to limit their exposure to meats, fish and poultry.

But the new guidelines are about to change.

announced that the nation’s leading association for cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons will soon begin to recommend limiting intake of bacon to two to three servings per week for those with moderate or high-risk lifestyles.

The association has been pushing for the change, which could help curb the coronavirus epidemic. 

In a statement, the association said that its latest guidelines, which were released in January, “are based on scientific evidence that indicates reducing intake of processed meats and saturated fat from animal sources can significantly lower the risk of developing and spreading coronaviruses.”

Bacon, as well as beef, pork and lamb, are the most commonly used meats to eat as part of a healthy diet, the statement said.

The new guidelines recommend limiting the amount of bacon consumed to two portions per day for those who live in low-income areas.

For people who live more than 200 miles away, limit consumption to one portion per day.

Those with moderate- or high risk lifestyles could still limit their consumption of meat, fish, poultry and other meat products. 

The American Cancer Society also said in its statement that it is now recommending that those with a history of chronic heart disease and stroke limit their intake of saturated fat, including butter and cheese, as part to reduce their risk of heart disease.

The statement says the association will also recommend limiting consumption of processed meat products that contain trans fat, such as sausages, ham and bacon.

In the meantime, there are still plenty of choices for bacon lovers.

It is often served as a side dish in many Mexican restaurants, or grilled on a grill, with corn tortillas, fried eggs and bacon and a side of cheese.
